Fleet Town Council Fleet Town Council

The Role of the Town Council
Fleet is a town in the county of Hampshire, UK, located 37 miles (60km) southwest of London. The estimated population for Fleet is around 36,000.
On the 1st April 2010 Fleet Town Council came into existence.  Fleet Town Council is a statutory body with elected members. Funding is principally provided by an annual precept paid by residents as part of their council tax.To supplement this money the town council will also be able to apply for other funding such as grants.
The potential range and duties of a Town Council are wide ranging, but from Fleet’s perspective these are likely to include: the provision of allotments, looking after our parks and play areas, powers to provide and maintain bus shelters, the power to provide and equip buildings for use of clubs, the power to acquire and maintain land, and the power to contribute financially to traffic calming schemes.

The Town Council takes responsibility for: two Community Centres – Ancell’s Farm and the Harlington Centre – the ownership and maintenance of five parks – The Views, Calthorpe, Basingbourne, Oakley and Ancells – along with childrens’ playgrounds, Fleet Cemetery, and various footpaths and other public areas in Fleet.

A principal aim of the Council is to provide and improve facilities and amenities and offer more activities for local residents. Becoming a member of the Council will give people the opportunity to express their views on local issues that are important to them.

Now that the new Council has been established legally it requires a maximum of 19 elected Councillors to represent the various wards in Fleet. Part of your Council Tax is allocated as the Fleet precept and it will be managed entirely by the new Town Council. It is important this money is spent on our community needs.

There are several important developments that will have a major impact on Fleet, for example, the Town Centre Future Vision, further development of Hitches Lane and the future of the Harlington Centre. We need people , whether as individuals or representing groups or clubs to volunteer their time and ideas to represent the views of local residents on the new Council. This is an exciting challenge and an opportunity to influence the quality of life for Fleet residents. You can help define and develop those issues that matter locally.
